Famous Quotes

“You must read, you must persevere, you must sit up nights, you must inquire, and exert the utmost power of your mind. If one way does not lead to the desired meaning, take another; if obstacles arise, then still another; until, if your strength holds out, you will find that clear which at first looked dark.”

“To have compassion for those who suffer is a human quality which everyone should possess, especially those who have required comfort themselves in the past and have managed to find it in others."

Giovanni Boccaccio

Introduction

Born in 1313 in Italy, Bocaccio was named after his father, Boccaccino de Chellino. His mother is unknown however researchers have concluded that his mother was most likely a French woman. Boccaccio was not a fan of his childhood because his father was always troubling him. His father was a Tuscan merchant, so he did not like the idea of his son having an interest in literature. His father forced Boscaccio to pursue a life in business. He sent him to school by 1328 in Naples. While there he also studied canon law. He admired the Patriarch and soon enough was able to work with him.

Businesses and education were not the only things that kept Boccaccio in Naples. His love for a women by the name of Fiammetta was the main reason he stayed in Naples. His love for her was expressed in majority of his works including the Decameron. The Decameron was a masterpiece. It composed of Boccaccio's life, from his tragedies to his comedies. It is said to be the perfect example of Italian classical prose. It has even had an enormous influence on Renaissance literature in Europe. Boccaccio lived a poor life. He had to earn his money by selling his works. The stress of living day by day was hurting his heart. The death of the patriarch also caused him much grief and stress. Because of the stress he became ill in his heart. A year later Boccaccio was buried in the Church of SS. Michele e Jacopo.
