Grazia Deledda

 Introduction

Grazia Deledda was born on September 27, 1871, as Grazia Maria Cosima Damiana Deledda. She was born in Nuoro, a small village on the island of Dardinia. She was the daughter of Giovanni and Francesc Cambosu Deledda. Her father was a landowner and miller. Her father was also a poet and author. He even published his own newspaper for a brief time.Although her father was an author, he was not the one to teach her to read and write. Deledda did not attend school, so she had to learn to read and write elsewhere. Her maternal uncle educated her and taught her, Loguderese Sardo, her first language. Because she did not attend school for an extended period of time, most of Grazia's education was self-taught from reading.Grazia's work was based on the influences of her friends and family. They were inspired by the myths, superstitions, religious and spiritual rituals, and stories that she was taught. The greatest influence, however, was the cycle of life. The death and birth of her family and friends were Deledda's primary source of inspiration. At the age of 17, she wrote her first stories. She later begins to write about the tragic effects of temptation and sin among primitive human beings. Deledda's work inspired many. Her incredible dedication to her writings helped her win a Nobel Prize. In 1926, Nobel Prize for literature was handed to Grazia. Her most notable works include Dopo il divorzio and Cenere. Her last writing was a semi-autobiographical depiction of an Italian winning battling cancer. Her novel was very successful however it was her last. Unfortunately, Grazia lost her life to breast cancer in Rome, Italy on August 15, 1936.
